I picked up on an older subject matter/submit where others which have said that a barrel acquiring the “Oval P” could have been equipped by Winchester:

Barrels affixed to receivers have the “Oval P” evidence If your barrel was built before 1905 and destined for fitting by a person other than Winchester (mail purchase).

I personally am not with the opinion that Winchester ever used mail get barrels within the manufacturing facility to complete or fill orders. Doing so would suggest they experienced run fully out of regular production barrels… if that transpired on a regular basis, any individual (the shop foreman) necessary to be fired, or hearth the individual answerable for ensuring which the assembly place Tactical firearms staff did not operate from the necessary parts necessary to build guns.

There naturally might be rifles with non unique barrels put on by non factory shops but they would not be marked or visible Except if the barrel deal with is significantly outside of sequence.
